<< Two thousand three hundred euro for 42 km>>
September 25th I ran the Berlin Marathon, thanks to the NABU, to raise money for the Bonelli’s eagle in Sicily. The competitive passion has subsided and the marathon was closed with a satisfactory result: € 2,300 collected and the interest of the NABU, the largest German environmental organization.
Even the breeding season in Sicily closed with a great success! After more than 30 years of absence, the Bonelli’s eagle has reoccupied the historic distribution area: the Hyblean Mountains where a new couple tried to breed with a late deposition.
The successes of our friends of the Gruppo Tutela Rapaci can be concretely assessed, not only by the active guard effort at the nest sites, but also by how the Bonelli’s eagle is responding to the protection of its most delicate breeding sites: in a direct manner with the conquest of new territories .
This is a tangible sign that one of the factors that were leading to the extinction of this eagle was precisely the human persecution on breeding sites. Sites that at the beginning of this project, could be estimated at 25-30 and now just six years away, are 44-48! The success of Bonelli’s eagle project is going beyond the most optimistic expectations. Not only because it is on a purely voluntary basis, but mainly because we are saving the rarest Italian eagle with peanuts!
Do you know how much has been earmarked for the LIFE project in Spain for the full recovery of the Bonelli’s eagle? Two million euro for 4 years!
In Portugal? Three and a half million Euros!
Since September 2015 we must say that a LIFE project is also active in Sicily for the Protection of Bonelli’s eagle, Lanner falcon and Egyption vulture, managed by WWF Italy and Regione Sicila, for which 2,877,000 euro were allocated.
It is natural to make a comparison: how much money has been spent on the preservation of the Bonelli by the Gruppo Protezione Rapaci through our donations and the donations of Stiftung Pro Artenvielfalt, Lipu, MAN, CABS and others?
In six years we have been spent 91 thousand Euros. 45% comes from Germany, 28% from Lipu, 18% by EBN Italy.
Thanking the Sicilian friends for having achieved till here a sensational rescue, and for having addressed the next steps to less urgent conditions, the seventh season of field activities will start with other aims. >>
