Bonelli’s Eagle

The 2018 recruitment campaign for the new volunteers of the GruppoTutela Rapaci is starting. The GTR is engaged in the protection of Sicilian birds of prey, in particular of, Bonelli’s eagle and Lanner falcon; these very rare species are the object of theft by the poachers, which allocate them to the illegal trade of birds of prey. The GTR, together with other associations and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, is active to prevent poaching and to denounce those responsible for such attacks on nature. The volunteers will watch over the nests preventing the poachers from approaching to predate them, thus allowing the flight of the young born and the conservation of the rare species.
For the GTR this is the eighth year of activity and in 2018 four anti-poaching camps are being organized; they will be the effective bases from which to start an important control and defense action throughout the Sicilian territory.
We are looking for responsible and enthusiastic volunteers, who passionately can engage in the difficult but fulfilling task of observing, monitoring and reporting incidents of poaching to the authorities.
Those in charge of the camps are working to look for new participants from all over Italy and Europe, who will be hosted for free in the camp facilities. Organizing an anti-poaching camp is not easy and provides a detailed planning of all the activities to be carried out; for this reason it is necessary to find a numerous number of volunteers even in the months of February and March.

An important novelty will affect university students: through a special agreement with their present university, it will be possible to have recognized the hours spent on field work for internship and thesis.

We hope that enthusiasts, birders, naturalists, volunteers and animal lovers will receive our invitation to participate: your help on the field will be precious and will allow the Bonelli’s eagles and other young birds of prey to fly free and take their first flight in late spring!
